Track Characteristics
Texas Motor Speedway is one of the fastest 1.5-mile tracks in NASCAR. The 24 degrees of banking in all four turns keeps speeds high and puts tremendous demands on the right-side tires. The track was modeled after Charlotte Motor Speedway but with slightly steeper banking, which produces different racing characteristics and often higher straightaway speeds.
The 2017 repave added the PJ1 traction compound (also known as "the substance") to the upper groove in the turns, giving drivers a second lane to race in and significantly improving the on-track competition. Before the repave, Texas had become increasingly one-groove, but the combination of new surface and traction compound opened up the racing.
The Texas heat plays a major factor, especially during the spring race. Track temperatures can soar above 130 degrees Fahrenheit on the asphalt surface, drastically affecting tire wear and grip levels. Teams that can manage tire degradation in the heat tend to run well at Texas.
