Track Characteristics

Marina Bay is the original Formula 1 night race and remains the most visually spectacular event on the calendar. Racing under 1,500 floodlights that illuminate the circuit to four times the brightness of a typical sports stadium, the Singapore Grand Prix transforms the city's waterfront into a dazzling motorsport arena. The contrast of brightly lit F1 cars against the Singapore skyline - including the iconic Marina Bay Sands hotel - creates images unlike anything else in the sport.

The circuit was shortened from 23 to 19 turns ahead of the 2023 season, removing a twisty section near the Singapore Flyer. The revised layout is faster and more flowing while retaining the challenging character of a tight street circuit. The race remains one of the longest on the calendar in terms of time, typically approaching the two-hour limit due to the slow average speed and frequent safety car interventions.

Singapore's tropical heat and humidity make this one of the most physically demanding races of the year. Cockpit temperatures can exceed 60 degrees Celsius, and drivers regularly lose several kilograms of body weight during the race. The bumpy surface and constant turning place enormous physical strain on the neck, arms, and core. Combined with the mental demands of racing within inches of concrete walls for nearly two hours, Singapore is a supreme test of endurance.

Notable Past Races

  • 2023: Carlos Sainz won a superb race on the revised layout, breaking Max Verstappen's 10-race winning streak. Lando Norris finished second in a McLaren resurgence, and the shortened circuit delivered better racing than the original layout.
  • 2019: Sebastian Vettel won after Ferrari's controversial strategy gave him the lead over teammate Charles Leclerc, who had been leading the race. The intra-team politics added to Singapore's reputation for drama.
  • 2017: Sebastian Vettel, Kimi Raikkonen, and Max Verstappen collided at Turn 1 on the opening lap in wet conditions. All three retired, handing Lewis Hamilton a crucial victory in the championship fight. One of the most dramatic first-lap incidents in F1 history.
  • 2008: The inaugural Singapore Grand Prix was overshadowed by "Crashgate" - Nelson Piquet Jr. deliberately crashed to bring out the safety car, which benefited his teammate Fernando Alonso, who went on to win. The scandal was not revealed until 2009.
