Track Characteristics
Lusail International Circuit underwent a major renovation ahead of the 2023 season, transforming from a modest motorcycle racing facility into a modern F1-grade circuit. The track features a flowing layout dominated by high-speed corners that place significant physical demands on drivers. Multiple long, fast turns taken at near-maximum speed create sustained lateral forces that test neck and core strength to the limit.
The circuit is characterized by its predominantly right-turning nature, with several sequences of linked medium and high-speed corners. Turn 1 is a fast right-hander that leads into a series of flowing changes of direction. The back section features more technical corners before the cars return to the long straight. The track is fully floodlit, allowing the race to take place under lights in the cool of the desert evening, avoiding the extreme daytime heat of the Qatari climate.
The 2023 race raised concerns about driver welfare, with several drivers suffering from extreme physical fatigue due to the sustained high-speed cornering in hot and humid conditions. Organizers have since worked to improve conditions, including adjusting the race schedule and enhancing cooling measures. Despite these challenges, the circuit produces competitive racing and the modern facilities reflect Qatar's significant investment in motorsport infrastructure.
