Track Characteristics

World Wide Technology Raceway, commonly known as Gateway, is the only egg-shaped oval on the IndyCar calendar. This unusual shape means the two ends of the track are distinctly different: Turns 1 and 2 feature a tighter radius with 11 degrees of banking, while Turns 3 and 4 have a wider, sweeping radius with 9 degrees of banking. This asymmetry forces drivers to constantly adjust their approach and makes car setup a fascinating compromise between the two ends.

The night race format at Gateway amplifies the intensity. Under the lights, cars run in a tight pack at speeds that make the 1.25-mile oval feel even shorter. The track rewards bravery in traffic and the ability to run multiple lanes, as the asymmetric turns allow different lines to work depending on tire wear and fuel load. Pit strategy is crucial, as track position is hard to gain but easy to lose.

Gateway sits just across the Mississippi River from St. Louis, making it a convenient destination for fans throughout the Midwest. The facility also includes a drag strip, a road course, and a karting track, making it a complete motorsport complex. The IndyCar event, branded as the Bommarito Automotive Group 500, has become one of the most popular races on the schedule since its addition.
