Track Characteristics
Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, still widely known by its original name Mosport, is one of the most respected and feared road courses in North America. Located about 75 kilometers east of Toronto in the rolling countryside of Clarington, Ontario, the 2.459-mile circuit features dramatic elevation changes, blind crests, and high-speed corners that test driver courage like few tracks on the continent. Mosport has always been a track that separates the brave from the merely fast.
The circuit's signature section is the opening sequence of corners. Turn 1 is a slightly banked, fast left-hander taken under braking from the front straight. Turn 2 is a long, sweeping right-hander that drops sharply downhill while turning, creating a sensation of falling and turning simultaneously that is unique in motorsport. Getting Turn 2 right requires complete trust in the car's grip because the corner is partially blind and the penalty for error is severe.
Turns 5 and 5A form a fast, flowing complex where the track rises and falls through direction changes. Turn 8 is another demanding high-speed corner with a blind apex over a crest. The back straight is one of the longest on any North American road course, allowing GTP prototypes to reach their highest speeds before a heavy braking zone into Turn 9. Turn 10, the final corner, is a fast left-hander that feeds onto the front straight and punishes drivers who are too aggressive on exit.
The track's elevation changes create natural grandstand areas where fans can watch from the hillsides, and the forested surroundings give the circuit an atmosphere that feels more European than North American. For sports car racing, the combination of high speeds, technical corners, and abrasive surface puts enormous demands on tires and brakes.
