Team History

Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing is one of the most unique ownership groups in all of motorsport, combining the racing expertise of Bobby Rahal with the celebrity appeal of late-night television legend David Letterman and the business acumen of Mike Lanigan. The team was founded by Rahal in 1992 after his illustrious driving career, and Letterman - a lifelong racing fan - joined as co-owner in 2004. Lanigan completed the ownership trio, and together they have built a competitive Honda-powered operation that consistently punches above its weight.

Bobby Rahal's credentials as a driver are impeccable. He won the 1986 Indianapolis 500 in one of the most memorable finishes in race history, passing Kevin Cogan on the final lap to take the checkered flag. Rahal also won three CART championships (1986, 1987, 1992) and 24 career races, establishing himself as one of the premier drivers of his era. His transition to team ownership was natural, and he brought the same meticulous attention to detail and competitive fire to the pit box that he had shown behind the wheel.

Under the RLL banner, the team has produced consistent results and memorable moments. Buddy Rice won the rain-shortened 2004 Indianapolis 500, giving the team its first Indy 500 victory as an owner. Takuma Sato became the first Japanese driver to win the Indianapolis 500 while racing for RLL in 2017, and added a second victory in 2020. Graham Rahal, Bobby's son, has been the heart of the team for more than a decade, carrying on the family tradition in IndyCar. The younger Rahal has won multiple races and become one of the most consistent performers in the series. For 2026, the team has expanded its ambitions by adding Mick Schumacher - son of seven-time Formula 1 World Champion Michael Schumacher - alongside Graham Rahal and young talent Louis Foster. The addition of a fourth car for Takuma Sato at the Indy 500 underscores the team's commitment to the Greatest Spectacle in Racing.
