Team History
Joe Gibbs Racing was founded in 1992 by Joe Gibbs, who had already achieved legendary status as the head coach of the Washington Redskins (now Commanders), winning three Super Bowls. Gibbs brought the same meticulous preparation and competitive fire from the football field to the NASCAR garage, and his team quickly became one of the sport's premier organizations.
The team's first Cup championship came in 2000 with Bobby Labonte driving the No. 18 Pontiac, capping a remarkable rise from startup to champion in less than a decade. Gibbs' ability to build winning organizations translated perfectly to racing, and the team attracted top-tier sponsors and talent from the start. Tony Stewart joined the team in 1999 and won back-to-back championships in 2002 and 2005, establishing JGR as a multi-car powerhouse.
A pivotal moment came in 2008 when JGR switched from General Motors to Toyota, becoming the first major Cup team to race for the Japanese manufacturer. The move was controversial at the time but proved visionary. JGR and Toyota built a partnership that has produced consistent success, with Kyle Busch winning the 2015 and 2019 championships for the team. The Toyota alliance also allowed JGR to become the hub of Toyota's Cup program, providing technical support to satellite teams.
The Gibbs family has endured profound tragedy alongside their racing success. Joe's son J.D. Gibbs, who served as team president and was being groomed to take over the organization, passed away in 2019 from complications of a neurological disease. His death deeply affected the team, but the Gibbs family channeled their grief into continued excellence on the track. Ty Gibbs, J.D.'s son and Joe's grandson, now drives the No. 54, carrying the family legacy into the next generation. With Denny Hamlin still chasing his elusive first championship and young talent throughout the lineup, JGR remains one of the teams to beat every weekend.
