Team History

Ed Carpenter Racing holds a unique distinction in the NTT IndyCar Series - it is the only team owned and operated by an active driver. Ed Carpenter founded the team in 2012 after spending years driving for other organizations, including Panther Racing and Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing. The Butler University graduate and stepson of IndyCar legend Tony George (former president of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway) combined his deep Indianapolis roots with his racing talent to create an independent Chevrolet-powered team based in the heart of the racing capital of the world.

Carpenter himself is one of the most dangerous qualifiers in Indianapolis 500 history. He has won the pole position for the Indy 500 three times (2013, 2014, 2018), more than many far more celebrated drivers have managed in their entire careers. While the team has not yet won the Greatest Spectacle in Racing, Carpenter's qualifying prowess on the big oval has made ECR a perennial threat in May. His decision to run only oval races while hiring full-time road and street course specialists has become a signature team model - one that allows Carpenter to focus his driving on the type of racing where he excels most.

The team has grown steadily since its founding, expanding from a single-car operation to a competitive two-car team. Notable drivers who have raced for ECR include Josef Newgarden, who won his first IndyCar race with the team in 2015, JR Hildebrand, Spencer Pigot, Rinus VeeKay, and Conor Daly. For 2026, the team fields Alexander Rossi - the 2016 Indianapolis 500 winner and former Andretti driver - alongside young Danish talent Christian Rasmussen, with Carpenter himself joining for oval events including the Indy 500. The combination of Rossi's experience, Rasmussen's potential, and Carpenter's oval expertise gives ECR a well-rounded attack on the 2026 season. Though it operates with a smaller budget than mega-teams like Penske and Ganassi, Ed Carpenter Racing consistently punches above its weight and embodies the independent spirit that has always been a cornerstone of Indianapolis racing.
