Team History

Chip Ganassi Racing is one of the most successful and enduring teams in IndyCar history. Founded by former driver Chip Ganassi in 1990, the team has grown from a small single-car operation into a multi-series racing powerhouse. Ganassi himself raced in the 1982 Indianapolis 500 before a career-altering crash at Michigan in 1984 led him to pivot from driving to team ownership - a decision that would reshape the landscape of American open-wheel racing.

The team's IndyCar success began immediately, with Arie Luyendyk scoring the team's first race win. But it was the hiring of Jimmy Vasser in the mid-1990s that launched Ganassi into the championship picture. Vasser won the 1996 CART title, and Alex Zanardi followed with back-to-back championships in 1997 and 1998, establishing Ganassi as one of the elite teams in the paddock. Juan Pablo Montoya and Dario Franchitti added to the team's legacy, with Franchitti becoming the team's most decorated driver by winning four IndyCar championships and three Indianapolis 500s (2007, 2010, 2012).

The arrival of Scott Dixon in 2003 launched a dynasty that continues to this day. The quiet New Zealander has won six IndyCar championships with Ganassi (2003, 2008, 2013, 2015, 2018, 2020), tying him with A.J. Foyt for the most in series history, along with an Indianapolis 500 victory in 2008. Dixon's remarkable consistency and longevity have made him the greatest driver in the team's history and one of the greatest in all of IndyCar. Alex Palou joined the team and quickly proved himself as Dixon's successor, winning the 2021 IndyCar championship in just his second full season. Palou has since established himself as the dominant force in IndyCar, winning championships in 2023, 2024, and 2025 - making him a four-time champion before turning 30. The team continues to develop young talent alongside its veterans, with Kyffin Simpson joining the lineup for 2026.
