Biography

Romain Grosjean's motorsport journey is one of the most remarkable stories in modern racing. Born in Geneva, Switzerland, and racing under the French flag, Grosjean spent over a decade in Formula 1, making 180 starts for teams including Renault, Lotus, and Haas between 2009 and 2020. He earned 10 podium finishes and was regarded as one of the most naturally fast drivers in the F1 midfield during his prime years with Lotus.

Grosjean's career took a dramatic turn at the 2020 Bahrain Grand Prix, where his car split in half upon impact with a barrier and burst into flames. He escaped the inferno with burns to his hands but survived what many considered a miraculous escape. The harrowing incident marked the end of his F1 career but not his competitive spirit. Rather than retiring, Grosjean channeled his determination into a new chapter in American racing.

He made his IndyCar debut with Dale Coyne Racing in 2021, earning three podiums and winning over new fans with his aggressive driving and genuine enthusiasm for the series. Stints with Andretti Autosport in 2022-2023 and Juncos Hollinger Racing in 2024 followed, with Grosjean adding three more podiums and showing flashes of the speed that had earned him respect in F1. After spending 2025 as a reserve driver for PREMA Racing in Europe, Grosjean made a surprise return to IndyCar in 2026, rejoining Dale Coyne Racing where his American adventure began.

At 39, Grosjean brings a wealth of experience to the No. 18 Honda. His return to DCR reunites him with the team that gave him his first IndyCar opportunity, and he showed immediately that his speed had not diminished by finishing eighth at the St. Petersburg season opener. His teammate Dennis Hauger benefits from Grosjean's decades of experience, and the veteran Frenchman has embraced a mentoring role alongside his continued pursuit of that elusive first IndyCar victory.
