Biography

Pierre Gasly is a French Formula 1 driver who has overcome career setbacks that would have broken most drivers, emerging as a resilient and respected competitor. Born on February 7, 1996 in Rouen, France, Gasly grew up racing alongside Charles Leclerc and Esteban Ocon in the competitive French karting scene. He won the GP2 Series championship in 2016 before making his F1 debut with Toro Rosso in 2017.

Gasly's career trajectory took a dramatic turn in 2019. Promoted to Red Bull Racing alongside Max Verstappen, he struggled to match the Dutchman's pace and was demoted back to Toro Rosso (later AlphaTauri) mid-season - a humbling experience that could have derailed his career entirely. Instead, Gasly responded with some of the most inspired drives of his career. His shock victory at the 2020 Italian Grand Prix at Monza, driving for AlphaTauri, was one of the most emotional moments in modern F1 history.

The Monza victory was made even more poignant by the fact that Gasly had lost his close friend Anthoine Hubert in a fatal Formula 2 crash at Spa-Francorchamps in 2019. Gasly has spoken openly about how Hubert's death affected him and has dedicated many of his finest performances to his late friend's memory. That emotional depth, combined with his raw driving talent, has made Gasly one of the most respected figures in the paddock.

Since joining Alpine for 2023, Gasly has been the team's lead driver and has consistently delivered solid results. In 2026, he sits eighth in the championship with 15 points, leading Alpine's charge in the new regulation era. At 30, Gasly is in the prime of his career and continues to prove that Red Bull's decision to demote him was one of the biggest personnel mistakes in recent F1 history. His experience and determination make him a valuable asset for any team on the grid.
